Warm, characterful, and full of history, this antique tea caddy is a handsome example of early Victorian design. The sarcophagus-shaped case features a pyramidal lid with a raised, paneled center, and rich reddish-brown wood with deep, streaky grain on the front. A small diamond-shaped escutcheon in pale bone or ivory-toned inlay frames the keyhole, offering a crisp contrast against the dark wood. Turned bun feet give the piece a graceful lift.

The lid carries a wonderfully worn, time-softened surface, with the fine scratches and mellow patina that come from generations of use. Tea caddies like this once held precious loose tea, and many were fitted with lidded compartments inside. Today, it makes a handsome vessel for keepsakes, desk supplies, or small treasures, or a lovely decorative accent on a console, sideboard, or bookshelf. It pairs especially well with leather-bound books, candlesticks, and other collected objects for a traditional, layered look.
